Religious extremism and its psyche, recommendations for law and order systems

Most of us don’t know that psychology is a field concerned with the human mind and behavior. The mind is a powerful weapon if left untrained. Un tame beast and untrained or un discipline mind are both similarly dangerous the only difference is is the giant within and the giant outside.

Religion is a way of life that genius among us has shown to us. This solves most of our existential issues. Try to answer most of our questions and queries that our conventional knowledge fails to answer. We are not aware of such practical answers to our questions by education or experience. Religion gives us basic laws or experiments and explanations which can give us a clue to solve the daily problems we face in our lives and community.

Religion also provides us the code of life.

How one can live his life?

What to do and what not to do?

What are the duties of a follower?

How neighbors, friends, and family should be treated?

From birth to death, from business to politics, from laws to enforcement of the laws, from illness to health, from parenting to marriages and divorce it has standards, rules and procedures to guide his followers for better handling, and success in this life and if one follows the religion who have a concept of life after death than in other life too.

It is a powerful tool to influence people for a shared cause, however a dangerous weapon to use against others if misused. Some of the most important issues in sorting out the extremism from society are:

1) Accountability:

Who will make individuals and groups to not use religion against others?

Whether law, state, government, civil society, organizations or the general public?

Who will be accountable for religious extremism; the individuals, groups, teachers, parents or law and order systems?

Who will be responsible for damages of psychological, emotional, spiritual, physical and mental assets of a community?

Whether the actors should be punished or directors, financiers, and supporters?

Whether they will be ever punished?

How to deal with the heroism of these extremists?

These questions are not easy to answer however someone has to answer these questions. Without accepting there is a problem, one can’t solve it in the first place. Then make accountable people for their words, actions, and thoughts if possible.

2) Responsibility

Whom responsibility it is, to declare what is extremism regarding religious limits of our society?

We live in a society where blaming game is our national game. We play it even we don’t need it. We are those unfortunate people who lie to themselves too. Responsibility comes with freedom. Freedom of thought and speech, words and actions, are only permissible if they do not challenge or limit the freedom of others.

Psychologically enslaved people and their minds will not accept the responsibility of their deeds and actions, decisions and free will. The expression of extremism in any form should be discouraged first by religious authorities then by governmental systems not the other way around. Someone must accept the responsibility of declaring religious extremism and make all responsible, accountable.

3) Communication

In most of the cases investigated by numerous journalists, researchers and intelligence agencies across the globe have been concluded that most of the incidents were the result of miscommunication. Communication resolves conflicts but if enforced with its full form. Meaning that only sender and receiver, encoding, medium and decoding of a message is not enough without the feedback and negotiation and minimization of noise and barriers of communication; i.e., emotions, bias, and individual preferences.

Extremism is a way of communication saying to others that they are not supposed to live and they should leave as soon as possible. Violence is used to suppress the majority or minority.  Who will communicate peace and religious harmony to masses? Someone has to do it for a peaceful present and future.

4) Trust:

Who can be trusted in this age of hypocrisy?

People having double standards, saying things they are not willing to do. Expecting mercy from the citizen of hell is just wishful thinking. Trust is built through mutual respect, empathy and willingness to agree and disagree with others point of view without fearing of violence or degradation.

Treating each other with equality and respect, where no one is superior or inferior. Slavery of every form is forbidden in any religion having sense and sensibility. Freedom is our birthright. Evils and enemies of freedom can take our lives, land, and possessions but they can’t take our freedom.

Only free people can trust and build trust. Free from hatred, biases, prejudices and much more. It is not important but necessary to build trust among different religious communities. The dialogue can minimize the chances of extremism.

Recommendations:

Law and order systems can make impossible, possible only through sincerity and willingness to understand and communicate with religious authorities by actively listening to their concerns.

The hate speech and literature should be banned by banning groups or organizations threatening the wellbeing of minorities on the name of religion. Some recommendations regarding the elimination of religious extremism are:

1) Information sharing:

Law and order systems should collaborate and share information with concerned religious authorities, about their members. That how they are threatening other religious community’s wellbeing and let them take action against such individuals.

At first, an opportunity should be given to defend themselves or their views. Doing the same should be warned about their exclusion from the group. Lastly arresting them for legal punishment along with counseling and rehabilitation should be taken into account.

2) Building trust:

Creating events and inviting religious representatives in gatherings of different religious communities. Social inclusion of all religious communities in events will prevent extremists to target any specific community.

If they do so there will be involvement of all communities against individuals and groups. The law and order systems can easily defeat extremism by this tactic.

3) Conflict resolution:

Where there is a human being there will be conflict. We can extend this to where there are living organisms there will be conflicts. Animals resolve conflicts through might and us humans by rights. This arousal of a conflict needs the full attention of law and order systems to resolve it by involving all parties to negotiate and come upon any conclusion acceptable to all or at least to the majority of parties involved.

Conclusion:

Religious extremism is just a result of no accountability, not taking full responsibility, miscommunication, and distrust and can be reduced through information sharing, building trust and conflict resolution by law and order systems.
