Brazil’s President Denounces Israeli Bombing in Gaza, Calls Out Global Double Standards and UN Power Imbalance

Paris, June 5, 2025 — At a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva delivered a damning indictment of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. His words were stark and unequivocal:

“This is not a war. It is genocide.”

His statement — more than rhetoric — marked one of the most forceful global condemnations by a head of state. It echoed the cries of millions watching, mourning, and pleading for the world to recognize the deliberate mass killing of civilians under the guise of warfare.

A Calculated Massacre

Lula described the Israeli assault on Gaza as “premeditated genocide,” carried out by a highly trained army that systematically targets women and children. While Israel claims self-defense, human rights observers, including UN Special Rapporteurs, have documented what appears to be intentional targeting of civilian infrastructure: schools, hospitals, and refugee shelters reduced to dust.

More than 54,000 Palestinians have died, most of them civilians. Yet, much of the world — particularly the powerful states — remain silent.

The Two-Tiered Grief

Lula did not stop at Israel. He turned his ire toward the hypocrisy of global responses. He highlighted a painful truth:

“Two Israelis were mourned worldwide. That same day, two Palestinian children carrying bags of flour were killed — and the world said nothing.”

This is not just a diplomatic observation. It is a moral indictment. A child’s death should weigh equally — but in global discourse and media coverage, it does not.

Lula’s statement resonates with ongoing criticism of media bias and diplomatic selectivity, especially in Western nations that vocally support human rights — except, it seems, in Gaza.

Reform or Irrelevance?

Lula renewed his long-held call to reform the UN Security Council, calling it “politically weak” and unfit to address modern conflicts. The Council has repeatedly failed to enforce ceasefires or even condemn the ongoing bloodshed in Gaza, largely due to US vetoes shielding Israel from accountability.

“Africa and South America must be represented, and major countries like Germany, Japan, and India deserve a seat,” Lula said.

This echoes growing calls across the Global South for a multipolar world where justice is not dictated by five powerful nations.

A Lone Voice of Moral Leadership?

In an international climate dominated by apathy and strategic silence, Lula’s statement cuts through the fog. While Europe continues to issue ambiguous statements, and the US ramps up arms shipments to Israel, Brazil stands out as one of the few democracies willing to name the atrocity for what it is.

Macron, notably, offered no public disagreement — nor did he echo Lula’s words.

The question is no longer whether this is war or genocide — that line is increasingly blurred. The real question is who is willing to say it out loud, and who benefits from pretending otherwise.
