Iranian traditional and pop musicians release powerful new tracks in response to Israeli aggression, blending ancient poetry with modern resistance.
TEHRAN, June 24, 2025 – In a heartfelt artistic response to recent Israeli attacks on Iran, a wave of prominent Iranian musicians — both traditional and pop — have released emotionally charged songs expressing solidarity with their homeland and the victims of violence.
Leading the cultural surge is Homayoun Shajarian, one of Iran’s most revered traditional vocalists and the son of the legendary maestro Mohammad-Reza Shajarian. On Sunday, Shajarian released a haunting new track titled “World of Oppression”, blending classical Persian poetry with contemporary anguish.
“Born From Wounded Souls”
Composed by Gholamreza Sadeghi, the song sets the evocative verses of Bidel Dehlavi (1642–1720) and Hushang Ebtehaj (1928–2022) to music, creating a piece that Shajarian described as being “born from the dust of wounded and broken souls.”
In a personal message accompanying the release, Shajarian wrote:
“This piece is a narrative of the endless sorrow of humans who have been silenced in the bloody nightmare of this world… in which anger, ugliness, ignorance, and selfishness have replaced love, beauty, and awareness.”
The song concludes with a universal dedication to “the noble and defenseless people of the world,” calling for a future where “no heart lives except with love and beauty.”
Music as Cultural Resistance
Shajarian’s contribution is part of a broader musical and cultural movement. Several pop singers have also reportedly released songs commemorating lives lost and defending Iran’s sovereignty in the wake of the June 13 Israeli attack — which Iranian officials have called an “unprovoked act of war.”
While the names of other contributing artists were not detailed in the initial release, social media platforms have been flooded with like #IranianVoices, #HomayounShajarian, and #WorldOfOppression, with listeners describing the tracks as “spiritual defiance,” and “music for mourning and memory.”
This artistic reaction echoes past eras of resistance art in Iran, where music has long served as both a cultural memory and a political gesture — especially during moments of national trauma.
Cultural Legacy and Contemporary Impact
Homayoun Shajarian’s music carries deep emotional resonance for Iranians across generations. Known for his ability to straddle the traditional and modern, Shajarian’s voice has become a symbol of cultural continuity and artistic integrity.
His father, the late Mohammad-Reza Shajarian, was not only a global ambassador of Persian classical music but also a frequent voice of the people, once famously aligning himself with protesters during the 2009 unrest. Homayoun appears to be carrying that torch forward.
Art Amid Conflict
As international diplomats urge calm and Iran’s military keeps its guard raised post-ceasefire, the cultural front remains active. Artists, poets, and musicians are stepping into their historical role: to reflect, to heal, and to resist.
In the eyes of many Iranians, this moment is not just one of geopolitical escalation — but one of cultural affirmation. With voices like Shajarian’s, Iran’s message resonates beyond politics: a plea for beauty in an unjust world.
