Qatari PM says Washington requested Doha to contact Tehran; calls Israeli actions “irresponsible.”
TEHRAN, June 24, 2025 (MNA) – Qatar’s Prime Minister has confirmed that the United States requested Doha to mediate with Iran in a bid to secure a ceasefire amid the rapidly escalating regional conflict.
Speaking at a joint press conference with his Lebanese counterpart, the Qatari Prime Minister revealed:
“The United States asked Qatar to contact Iran to achieve a ceasefire, and we made the necessary contacts in this regard.”
This admission underscores Qatar’s pivotal diplomatic role in the aftermath of the U.S. military strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities and Iran’s retaliatory missile attack on the U.S. Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.
Doha Warns Against Israeli Escalation
In unusually sharp language, the Qatari leader condemned Israel’s role in fueling the regional crisis:
“Israel’s actions are irresponsible and cause instability in the region.”
He further emphasized that Israeli aggression had “halted efforts to end the Gaza war” and expressed concern that Israel may use the current ceasefire as cover to escalate its attacks on Gaza.
“We hope that the ceasefire between Iran and Israel will continue… The world must stand united against Israel and stop the aggression against Gaza.”
Strategic Implications
This development comes on the heels of Iran’s confirmation that it targeted the U.S. military base in Qatar only in response to Washington’s aggression, stressing that Qatar was not the target.
Qatar’s willingness to engage diplomatically with Iran — even after the missile strikes — highlights Doha’s unique balancing act: hosting a key U.S. military installation while maintaining open and constructive relations with Tehran.
Key Takeaways:
- U.S. requested Qatari mediation with Iran to halt the escalating conflict.
- Qatar has established contact with Iran and is working to sustain the Iran-Israel ceasefire.
- Qatari PM condemns Israel for undermining regional peace, calls for global pressure to stop Gaza aggression.
- Israel’s military campaign, according to Doha, jeopardizes both regional stability and humanitarian de-escalation.
Broader Context
This diplomatic maneuvering comes after a week of rapid military escalation:
- June 13: Israel launched a surprise attack on Iran, including strikes on residential areas in Tehran.
- June 22: The U.S. joined the conflict by bombing Iranian nuclear sites.
- June 23: Iran responded with missiles targeting U.S. forces at Al Udeid base in Qatar.
Now, Qatar’s mediation offers a potential off-ramp — but only if all parties, including Israel, restrain further escalation.
